Matt Roberts from Darkmantra Design and I were approached by Kimberley Lysons from the band “Dawn” about the art direction and graphic design of her up and coming Album “The Spinning Jenny.” We had heard snippets of her music and before too long the CD was on high rotation and our 8 year old knew each song, word for word. After many hours of enthusiastic concept brainstorming Kimberley invited us along to the album photo shoot so that we could get a “feel” for what the artwork will entail.
- Paper doll all band members standing in a line, looking at the rising sun, shot from behind so all are silhouetted. The first idea we workshopped was with everyone holding hands, so it almost looks like a paper doll. Kris wanted to work the instruments in to the shot as well. We’d try to do a couple of variations. Assuming it’s not super cloudy, this is the shot we need to get right fairly quickly when the sun is coming up. The window of opportunity will be one or two minutes.
- Spinning Jenny – Get an overhead shot with Kimberley in the middle looking up at the camera, the other five arranged around her in a close circle, with arms outstretched like the wheel of a spinning jenny.
- Themed single shots – One of our concepts revolves around individual shots of each member, with each of the six having a track on the first CD, and a prop and setting to match.
